Public Education: Eye Surgery Education Council The ASCRS Foundation has undertaken a multi-year public education effort designed to inform patients, the healthcare press, and mainstream media of the benefits and risks of ophthalmic surgery. Through the Eye Surgery Education Council (ESEC), the Foundation serves as a leading source for accurate information on cataract and refractive surgery, glaucoma, and the management of presbyopia.
Research The ASCRS Foundation awards ten $5,000 research grants per year for projects in ophthalmology. Grants are awarded through an application process with final decisions made by the Foundation’s Grants Committee. Recipients are encouraged to present their finding in the form or a paper or poster at the ASCRS Annual Symposium.
Humanitarian Eyecare The ASCRS Foundation operates the Robert M. Sinskey Pediatric Eyecare Clinic in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Foundation’s clinic is staffed by a full-time ophthalmologist, and provides treatment for area children and adults suffering from cataracts and other eye disease.
